In
the fur biz, we live and die by the weather. Warm weather, fur sales
down. Add in a dicey economy, and pelt prices can fall dramatically.
While the weather turns with
the seasons, it also turns on the sun. As John Coleman, the founder of
the Weather Channel explains, these global warming/cooling trends create
cyclical climate patterns that go on for decades, such as mini-ice ages.
In December, much of the
country — most of the Northern Hemisphere, in fact — is blanketed and
silenced under snow or slippery, dangerous and frigid with sleet and
ice. Airports and freeways are buried. Fur coats, wool and leather are the clothing fabrics of choice this season.
As the temperature drops,
retail sales rise and inventories at the fur clothing shops disappear.
In response, fur pelt prices at the Kopenhagen Fur Center’s December auction are strengthened.
So, the fur clothing business is celebrating with a Christmas toast: : ”Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!”
